When we name our children, we give them a gift that they will carry forever. A Hebrew name is used throughout a lifetime, from the time of the naming ceremony, through b’nei mitzvah, at the time of a wedding and at a funeral. Additionally, our Hebrew names are used if the community says a prayer for us and when we are remembered after we have passed away on the observance of the yearly yahrzeit.

Ceremonies to name baby girls (called a Simhat Bat, Welcoming the Daughter) are more flexible and may be done on the first Shabbat after their birth or at other times soon after their birth. This ceremony may be done in a synagogue but is often done as a home ceremony.

Baby boys are usually named as part of their Brit Milah ceremony (Bris), eight days after they are born. But often baby boys have had a secular circumcision in the hospital shortly after their birth. When this occurs a baby boy may have a naming ceremony as well.
